The Multnomah Athletic Club (MAT) plans to reopen in phases after a former employee drove a rented SUV packed with explosives into the club and ignited a fire that killed him. The building's sprinklers caused about 80% of the damage and caused water to seep into the basement floors. However, large portions of the private Portland club are completely untouched, including most of the athletic facilities. The club is hoping to reopen some of these areas within weeks, though some may take longer. Bruce Whitman, who worked as a bartender at the MAC from 2012 to 2019, had been obsessed with the club for years and had been harassing and threatening members.
