French film editor Matthieu Laclau has been working in the Chinese film industry for 20 years, working with directors such as Jia Zhangke, Zihan Geng, Wei Shujun, Kok Rui Lau, Shangjun Cai, Xue Bai, Yang Zhang and Midi Z. His experience in China has allowed him to observe the changing industry, particularly in Chinese-language cinema, and he believes that the process of telling the story, finding the film language of the film, caring about the characters, and understanding the characters are still the same as they were 100 years ago. He also mentioned the potential for AI to become a useful tool in understanding or informing viewers of the story. He highlighted the rise in interest in European-productions and suggested that European co-production countries could combine their own money and reach their own market.
