More than half of California lawmakers representing California have a median net worth of at least $1 million, according to a NOTUS analysis of their most recent financial disclosures. One major factor driving their wealth is the stock market, with Republican Rep. Darrell Issa, who has represented California since 2001, having made his fortune in the car alarm business and remains a multimillionaire throughout his time in Congress. Former House Speaker, Paul Pelosi, holds individual shares in tech giants such as Alphabet, Apple, PayPal, Dropbox and Roblox. Despite previously opposing a ban on stock trading, Pelosi has now come around to support a ban. The study also highlighted the potential conflict of interest between lawmakers trading stocks in industries under their oversight. The movement to ban lawmakers from owning stocks has received support from Democrats and Republicans in Congress and the White House.
