Hector Amador Balderas, a previously deported illegal migrant, has pleaded guilty to killing an 11-year-old boy in a hit-and-run in Escondido, California. The case sparked outrage over California's sanctuary laws and Gov. Gavin Newsom's immigration policies. The crash occurred on the day before Thanksgiving and resulted in the death of Aiden Antonio Torres De Paz. Former DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin called on Governor Newsom to honor ICE's arrest detainer. Following BalDeras' arrest, Immigration and Customs Enforcement issued an immigration detainer, but the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office rejected the request under California sanctuary-state restrictions.
