Utah Sen. John Curtis has introduced a bipartisan bill to reduce the national debt, which is now at nearly $39 trillion. The Fiscal Commission Act would establish a 16-member panel of lawmakers and outside experts to address the issue. The commission would be tasked with developing a report on the federal government's fiscal condition and proposing legislation to stabilize the debt-to-GDP ratio within 15 years. Once the report is finalized, Congress will vote on the proposal by May 17, 2027. Curtis, who supports the bill, aims to use Utah's budget policies as a model for addressing the federal debt. The proposal has nine co-sponsors, including those from North Carolina, New Hampshire, and Virginia.
