Federal and state transportation leaders gathered for a roundtable discussion about aviation safety in Alaska, with the Federal Aviation Administration planning to invest nearly $425M over the next three years to upgrade runway lighting, weather reporting and air traffic systems across Alaska. The funding includes the FAA Alaska Safety Initiative, established under the FAA Reauthorization Act, which aims to reduce Alaska’s aviation fatality rate by 90% by 2033. Despite this, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has issued its final investigation report on the Bering Air crash near Nome, which killed pilot Chad Antill and all nine passengers. The summit also discussed creating a dedicated spare parts depot in Alaska and contracting maintenance work directly to the Alaska Department of Transportation. Concerns were raised about ongoing closure of critical rural flight stations across the state.
