A new project by the Pontchartrain Conservancy, Eva Hillmann, is investigating the health of Bayou St. John in New Orleans. The group is collecting monthly water samples along different sections of the bayou, testing for qualities such as heavy metals, bacteria, nutrients and algae. Funding for the project came from a $100,000 grant from the Coypu Foundation. The project aims to provide valuable information about habitats along the waterway, from transitional marshes to more hardened shorelines. Concerns have been raised about the condition of the Bayou, which could pose issues for residents including pollution in the streets and potential environmental pollution. The team has yet to analyze the preliminary results.
