In June, a female traveler from Hong Kong was caught attempting to smuggle a luxury wristwatch worth over 1 million yen to evade import duties. Despite initially denying any high-value goods exceeding Japan's 200,000-yen duty-free allowance, a search of her suitcase revealed an empty box for a luxury brand bracelet and a second for a rare luxury ring. The woman was cited for intentionally attempting to evade tax payments by lying to officers. The airport has also seen a surge of tourists attempting to import counterfeit goods across the border.
