Voters in 2022 approved Proposition 131, which created the office of lieutenant governor, allowing the lieutenant governor to be first in the line of succession if the governor leaves office early, a relatively frequent occurrence in Arizona history. This makes it easier for gubernatorial nominees to select running mates at least 60 days before the Nov. 3 general election. The Legislature will decide the lieutenant's powers and duties, but hasn't yet. Republican candidate Andy Biggs has said over 60 people have expressed interest in being his running mate, while Democratic operative Adam Kinsey suggested that candidates should consider lieutenant governors whose resumes balance the ticket. The running mate may not necessarily influence votes but will garner significant press attention and social media reaction.
