A study by the Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission (NIRPC) has found that nearly 90% of Northwest Indiana truck drivers have used an undesignated parking location within the last five days. The study, which includes data from 2015 and 2019, also found that there are about 4,700 spaces in Lake, Porter and LaPorte counties, 87% of them privately owned. The federal government is focusing on the issue, setting aside $200 million for truck projects and an executive order in 2025 to increase the number of parking spaces for big rigs. Factors such as convenience, safety, security, convenience, and amenities offered are also considered in the study. The Transportation Committee also heard that construction of the Willowcreek Road extension's first phase has been delayed another two years, to fiscal year 2029, which begins in July 2028.
