The iconic breakfast sandwich was created by franchisee Herb Peterson in 1971 and has remained unchanged since its debut. The first fast food breakfast sandwich from McDonald's was from Jack in the Box in 1969. The McDonald's Breakfast Jack soon became the chain's best-selling item. The egg McMufflein is made with real butter and celebrated its 50th anniversary last year.
