Shipping rate-hike bill advances to governor

A controversial measure, Senate Bill 2694, aims to increase rates for the main interisland shipping company, Young Brothers, by up to 5% a year, despite a nearly 26% increase in rate last year. The bill requires the Public Utilities Commission to establish automatic adjustment mechanisms to address economic factors. Young Brothers argues that the slow approval process at the commission has caused the company to fall behind and become unstable. Some goods, such as farm products, may be exempt from the rate increase.
