Paramount has decided to cancel its latest Star Trek show, Starfleet Academy, due to its failure to appeal to younger audiences. The cancellation reveals the biggest lie about the Star Trek franchise, claiming that the franchise must appeal to young viewers to survive. This is not the first time Paramount has made a decision to cancel a show aimed at appealing to younger viewers. The success of Star Trek: The Next Generation, which explicitly modeled itself after The Original Series, was another example of the formula that has worked for nearly four decades. In other instances, Star Trek Voyager and Star Trek Enterprise both built off the formula of the original series. However, even the exception, Deep Space Nine, which is set on a space station, was criticized for its departure from the formula, and the addition of Worf and the Defiant made it more popular than ever before.
