Ari J. Lauer, a 61-year-old corporate lawyer, was sentenced to 11-year and five months in prison for his role in the DC Solar fraud scheme. The fraud, which claimed more than $900 million from investors, was facilitated by Lauer's role as outside counsel and his ability to hide the scheme's financial issues. The company claimed investors would buy mobile solar generators and rent them to third parties, but the market for the equipment barely existed. The scheme involved roughly 17,000 generators valued at about $2.5 billion. Lauer pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire and bank fraud, 12 counts of bank fraud and 10 counts of wire fraud affecting a financial institution. Jeffrey Carpoff, the scheme’s founder, was given 30 years in prison and ordered to pay $790.6 million in restitution. Ronald J. Roach, the company’ CFO, has pleaded guilty and is scheduled to be sentenced on April 13.
