Michael Chertoff, former secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security under George W. Bush, has warned that climate disinformation and climate change denial are a significant threat to national security. The World Economic Forum's annual assessment of global risks highlighted the dire state of both the climate and information environment, with mis/disinformation ranking second and extreme weather events ranking fourth. These challenges are further exacerbated by climate denial and increased reliance on false or distorted information, which can disrupt security and stability. Natural disasters in the United States cost $130 billion per year, a sixfold increase since the 1980s, and kill Americans at roughly twice the historic rate. Chertof argues that the need for reliable information on climate threats should matter regardless of location or political persuasion.
