The first episode of Invincible, a superhero series about a teenager named Mark Grayson, premiered five years ago on Amazon Prime Video. The series, voiced by Hollywood stars Steven Yeun, J.K. Simmons, and Sandra Oh, introduced a surprising twist to the show's origin story. The first episode, which included a scene where Omni-Man, kills all of Earth's greatest heroes with his bare hands, effectively negates the genre's guarantee that the hero is safe and that his father is who he claims to be. The show's creator, Robert Kirkman, and showrunner Simon Racioppa understood that the twist only worked if the audience had been lulled into accepting the rules of a different story. Despite a slow decline in superhero content, Invincible's success has been largely attributed to its ability to deconstruct the superhero genre.
