A federal grand jury in San Diego has indicted a U.S. Border Patrol agent, Marcos Javier Andrade, for allegedly shooting an unarmed 19-year-old driver in 2022 in Calexico. The indictment alleges that Andrade tried to stop a minivan suspected of smuggling undocumented immigrants on a highway in Calesxico, California. After the van failed to pull over, Andrade allegedly fired eight shots at the driver, striking him in his neck, hip, shoulder, and hand. The teen survived after undergoing surgery for his injuries. The charges against Andrade are set to be arraigned next week in SanDie. This indictment comes at a time when Border Patrol agents and other immigration officers have faced increased scrutiny for shooting US citizens.
