A coalition of lawmakers are pushing for a change in the way Capitol Hill approaches tech regulation, suggesting that social media should be regulated like drugs. The proposals come after a jury found Meta and YouTube liable for misleading users about the dangers of their platforms, and recent polls show a majority of adults and teenagers support restrictions on social media for children. The legislation aims to impose stricter requirements for verifying users' ages and potentially limiting the most harmful parts of social media platforms for minors. The first bill, the GUARD Act, passed unanimously out of the Senate Judiciary Committee, would impose age verification requirements on artificial intelligence chatbots and a bill in the House from the newly formed Kids Online Safety Caucus would limit features like algorithmic recommendations and market research for users under 17. Despite support from lawmakers and advocates, the influence of the tech industry is the biggest obstacle to passing such legislation.
