Airline CEOs urged by lawmaker to lower fares if fuel prices come down

U.S. Rep Ritchie Torres, D-N.Y., has urged the CEOs of several major airlines to lower their prices if the cost of jet fuel declines. This comes after a surge in jet fuel prices this year, leading to increased surcharges, bag fees and fares being increased. Torres has written to Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, JetBlue Airways and Southwest Airlines asking for public commitment to reducing costs. Fuel is the biggest expense for airlines, with Delta reporting a $2 billion headwind this quarter and announcing it would scale back its capacity plans.
