Preserving filibuster matters more than passing the SAVE Act

Republicans in the US Senate are under pressure from President Donald Trump to pass the SAVE (Safeguard American Voter Eligibility) America Act, which ensures only U.S. citizens vote in federal elections. However, any attempt to eliminate the filibuster should be rejected, as the current Senate rules require a 60-vote threshold to move forward on legislation. Senate Majority Leader John Thune, who has a 53-member majority, may not have enough senators to reach the magic 60 number. Some within his party, including Utah Sen. Mike Lee, are urging him to consider other extreme options, such as eliminating the legislative filibuster. Despite this, some GOP senators have recently backpedaled on their former support for the filibuster.
