The Bakersfield City Council heard updates on the city's tree status following scrutiny from council members and the community. The Bakerfield Tree Advisory Group (TAG), a committee created to help expand the city’s urban forest, presented its progress and recommendations at a meeting. The group's goal is to improve Bakersfields' environmental and community health by proactively planting, maintaining, and preserving the urban forest. Over the past 11 months, several TAG recommendations have reportedly been implemented or adopted, including approving TAG's recommended tree list, implementing a new trimming schedule, awarding a tree inventory and risk assessment, providing public service announcements for trimming locations and giving notifications on the official city website. Vice Mayor Manpreet Kaur recommended expanding the committee by adding community-based organizations like Sierra Club. Other recommendations included the rule of planting at least one tree for each tree removed, and the city attorney recommending Development Services to develop a relevant policy and reviewing existing ordinances on trees.
