Many AI toys claim to use chatbots meant for adults and teens

A report by the U.S. Public Interest Research Group Education Fund (PIRG) has found that toy companies are marketing toys as being powered by AI models, despite restrictions meant to prevent children from using them. The report found that while major tech companies have age restrictions on their chatbots, some toy companies claim to use OpenAI and Google to power their products. PIRG was able to sign up for developer access for AI models from Google, OpenAI, and xAI and faced "no substantive vetting" regarding whether its services would target children. The lack of oversight raises questions about companies' ability to track who are using their systems and third parties.
