Amazon has acquired Fauna Robotics, a two-year-old New York startup, a 50-pound bipedal robot called Sprout. The acquisition comes less than two months after Fauna launched Sprout to R&D partners. The company's robot is designed to be more approachable and less restrictive than industrial machines like Tesla and Boston Dynamics. Fauna was founded by Rob Cochran and Josh Merel, two engineers who met at Meta and later returned to hardware. The deal closed last week and was confirmed by Amazon on Tuesday. This acquisition is a significant shift from Amazon's previous consumer robotics track record.
