British photographer Mahtab Hussain is embarking on a 90-day road trip across America, aiming to capture the true story of Muslim America. The project, Muslims in America, involves photographing Muslim communities across six cities: Toronto, New York, LA, Baltimore, Syracuse, and Dearborn, Michigan. Hussain's work combines formal portraits with video interviews, allowing each sitter to speak about faith, identity, and life in a country that has viewed Islam with suspicion since 9/11. The road trip will take Hussain from South Paterson, New Jersey, to Houston's growing Latino Muslim community. The series is described as a "collective self-portrait," with Hussain describing the sitters as co-authors. The Kickstarter campaign offers rewards including a limited portfolio of 30 giclée prints and a limited-edition journal of 250 copies.
