Amy Griffin's memoir, The Tell, has been controversial due to its portrayal of a woman's trauma, allegations of being sexually abused by a teacher at her Texas middle school in the 1980s. The book, endorsed by Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, and Jenna Bush Hager, tells of her journey to recover long-repressed memories of abuse from a teacher. However, a former classmate, identified in court documents as Jane Doe, filed a lawsuit against Griffin for invasion, emotional distress, and defamation of defamation. The lawsuit alleges that Jane Doe was sexually assaulted at a school dance and the alleged abuse took place at a different teacher than the one Griffin accused. Griffin's attorney, Thomas A Clare, accused the New York Times of manufacturing a false narrative about her client and her book.
