The Bay of Algeciras off the southern tip of Spain, off the coast of the country, has been discovered by Spanish archaeologists in a three-year-long project that catalogued 134 shipwrecks dating back to the Punic, Roman, medieval, and early modern eras. The oldest wrecker dates to around the fifth century B.C.E., and most of the others come from the Roman era or early modern era. The project also discovered rare finds, including three medieval vessels that provide a rare glimpse into seafaring during late Islamic rule in southern Spain. The researchers are working to preserve these underwater historical time capsules due to climate change, commercial activity, and invasive species threatening to erode these wrecks. They also highlighted the danger of environmental degradation due to the highly trafficked area being caused by shipyards, oil refineries, and other industries.
