Japan has rejected an assessment by U.S. intelligence agencies of a "significant shift" in its stance on Taiwan, stating it has not changed its approach to assessing an existential threat. The agencies had previously stated that Japanese Prime Minister's remarks regarding a hypothetical Chinese attack on Taiwan could lead to a Japanese military response differed from the rhetoric of previous Japanese leaders. China has responded angrily to the assessment, urging its people not to travel to Japan and cutting off some exports.
