Some officials in Donald Trump’s Cabinet and White House staff are living in secure military housing due to safety concerns. This move aligns with authoritarianism, as seen by Steven Levitsky, a professor of government at Harvard University. The security concerns are real, with violent online rhetoric against prominent public officials increasing between 2021 and 2025. The move is seen as a sign of authoritarianism by placing senior officials on military bases or within walled compounds to minimize the possibility of a coup. The officials claim they are paying fair-market values for their housing, which range from $4,500 to $6,500 a month. However, this behavior damages public trust given the administration's pattern of corruption and self-dealing. Since returning to office, Trump and his family have added an estimated $3.4 billion to their fortune.
