This move is part of a broader national push to curb classroom distractions, with states and districts also rethinking the role of laptops and other always-on devices during the school day. The bill, which has bipartisan co-sponsors and amendments, aims to allow for "distraction-free" classrooms. Over 30 states already require districts to restrict student phone use in some way, and Illinois should join this movement. The author suggests that writing on something other than a keyboard can benefit students, especially students learning to read, and that handwriting can also aid deeper learning. Neuroscientist Jared Cooney Horvath argued that technology-integrated into education can lead to underperformance of Gen Z students who are underperforming academically compared to their parents.
