The question was posed by an SEO who wanted to understand why managing multiple sitemap files would be preferred over keeping everything in one place. Mueller's answer suggests that unnecessary complexity may come from reasons that are not immediately obvious. He listed several reasons for the use of multiple satemaps, including both practical and less intentional reasons. He also noted that sitemazes can be used in creative ways to group different types of content and help avoid technical limitations like the 50,000 URL cap.
