Australia-based Cortical Labs is working on two "biological data centers," one in Melbourne and another in Singapore, using its biological CL1 units instead of relying on traditional GPU servers. Each CL1 computer is equipped with a chip with 200,000 human brain neurons grown directly on it, compared to the human brain's estimated 99 billion neurons. This move comes as tech giants like Google, Amazon, Microsoft, and OpenAI are investing billions in building new data centers to train and develop advanced AI models. The energy-intensive nature of these data centers could potentially impact local power grids and raise electricity prices. However, the use of these chips for these purposes could significantly reduce energy usage.
