Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski has introduced legislation to exempt public schools from H1-B visa fees. The H-1B visa is a non-immigrant, employer-sponsored visa for foreign professionals in "specialty occupations" requiring at least a bachelor's degree. Last year, President Donald Trump introduced a $100,000 fee per new H-B Visa. Murkowski believes this exemption would help alleviate a staffing shortage across Alaska public schools. The bill has been referred to the Committee on the Judiciary. There are currently 573 international teachers working in Alaska, 341 of whom use H-IB visas.
