Nasir Ali, a "pioneer of the Indian restaurant trade", has died at the age of 96. He moved from Bangladesh to Salisbury in the 1960s and opened the city's first Indian eatery, The Asia Restaurant. He was also the first Bangladeshi to buy a house in the city and helped establish The Muslim Association of Salisbury. His son, Liton, described his father as a "true pioneer of the curry boom", with people driving miles to buy spices from his shop in the 80s. Former mayor Atiqul Hoque, who was born in Bangladesh, said Ali "laid the foundation" for Bangladesh's citizens in Salisbury and that he will always be indebted to him.
