The Oregon Ducks' defense, which led the team to the College Football playoffs the past two seasons, has underperformed, according to new defensive coordinator Chris Hampton. The Ducks return eight starters, including the entire defensive line, and eight secondary starters. The team's focus is to elevate proven commodities and develop depth to create a strong defense that won't fold when the stakes get high. The defense ranked 17th nationally in total defense and 12th in scoring defense under Tosh Lupoi, now California’s head coach. The front four of the defense, including Matayo Uiagalelei and Teitum Tuioti, could have entered the 2026 NFL Draft but returned to chase a national title. Pass rush is an area that needs refinement, with Rip Rowan, who previously worked with All-Pro defensive end Maxx Crosby, being hired to assist. The goal is for players of all levels to build cohesion and allow the inexperienced to learn from more experienced players.
