Blockchain ecosystems are losing developers across the board, with weekly crypto commits dropping by 75% to around 210,000, and active developers decreasing by 56%. This is in stark contrast to the broader software ecosystem, which saw a significant increase in developers in 2025, with GitHub adding about 36 million developers to its global base to over 180 million. Much of this growth is due to artificial intelligence, with the company hosting over 4.3 million AI-related repositories. The number of repos importing large language model software development kits increased by 178% over the past year, while generative AI projects now attract over 1 million monthly contributors. The data suggests that while crypto may be consolidating rather than collapsing, the sector could rebound if another bull market draws builders back.
