U.S. Rep. Jim Jordan, the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, used a hearing with Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to set up legislation he plans to mark up that would crack down on sanctuary cities, jurisdictions that refuse to honor federal immigration detainers. Democrats also criticized Noem over the shooting deaths of two Minneapolis residents by federal agents and alleged civil liberties abuses by her department. The hearing was marked by a partisan divide, with Noem reading over 20 victims' names in her opening statement and their families sitting behind them. Noem defended her department's record, stating fentanyl trafficking at the southern border is down 56%, over 700,000 people detained and deported, and over 2.2 million more have left voluntarily.
