Anthropic's Claude Code, the company's AI coding tool, was accidentally bundled into a routine update of Claude Code and pushed to the public registry for download and update software packages. The leak exposed the full source code, exposing the full architecture, unreleased features, and internal model performance data. The code was found in a zip archive on Anthropic's own cloud storage, containing nearly 2,000 files and 500,000 lines of code. Within hours, the codebase was mirrored and dissected across GitHub, leading to thousands of stars and raising questions about operational security at the company. The leaked code contained dozens of feature flags for capabilities that appear fully built but haven't yet been shipped, including a "persistent assistant" running in background mode that allows Claude Code to keep working even when a user is idle. This leak gives competitors a detailed feature roadmap and could be a boon for Anthropic as it prepares to go public. The company has issued a takedown notice from outside developers, prompting a retest.
