A Northern Kentucky church is asking the United States Supreme Court to review its decision to deny it the right to build a shrine behind Our Lady of Lourdes church in 2021. The controversy comes five years after Park Hills' zoning board approved a plan for the shrine. Concerned neighbors challenged the plan in the Kentucky Supreme Court, which blocked it. The church argues that the decision violates the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act, a federal law protecting religious institutions from discriminatory zoning laws. The nonprofit Christian legal organization, First Liberty Institute, is representing the parish. If the Supreme Court grants the petition, a decision is likely until at least summer.
