The U.S. Supreme Court has declined to reconsider a lawsuit brought by the Public Interest Legal Foundation (PILF) against Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, alleging that her office was not adequately purging dead people's names from state voter lists. The watchdog group claimed that 27,000 dead Michiganders remained on the voter rolls violating requirements under the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA). Benson disputed these claims and argued that the state's process for removing the names of deceased individuals was reasonable. A federal judge dismissed the case in 2024, stating that even if all 27,00 names remained on PILF's list, that would be less than one-half of 1% of all the voters on Michigan's voter registration list.
