Two Ohio lawmakers have introduced House Bill 783, which would require abortion providers to inform patients about an experimental abortion reversal treatment. The bill would mandate doctors to inform pregnant women of this option before prescribing the abortion medication. It would require the Ohio Department of Health (ODH) to provide information on its website about the treatment and create a 24-hour hotline for questions about abortion reversal. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) does not support prescribing progesterone to stop a chemical abortion. However, the procedure is not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and is not banned in Ohio or any other state. Critics argue that the bill could infringe on the provision of the amendment that protects abortion before fetal viability, generally considered to be between 22 and 24 weeks of gestation, and at any point in a pregnancy if a physician deemed it threatens patient's life or health.
