A study by the American Automobile Association (AAA) has found that extreme temperatures significantly impact the performance, efficiency, and operating costs of electric and hybrid vehicles. Cold weather has the most impact, sharply reducing driving range and increasing energy use, while hot weather also reduces efficiency. The research also revealed that climate control systems, such as heating and air conditioning, are a significant driver of reduced range and higher costs. The study also found that high temperatures strain battery systems, increasing internal resistance and reducing overall efficiency over time. The findings underscore the importance of factoring climate into vehicle ownership decisions, particularly in regions with extreme seasonal temperatures.
