Texas politicians' responses to a deadly shooting in downtown Austin quickly became political, with Republicans criticizing the country's naturalization process and Democrats calling for stricter gun reform laws. The gunman, who was killed within a minute of arriving at the scene, was identified as a naturalized citizen from Senegal. The Department of Homeland Security stated that the man entered the United States on a tourist visa in 2000 and became a lawful permanent resident by marrying a U.S. citizen in 2006 and was naturalized in 2013. Many Texas Republicans, including Gov. Greg Abbott, suggested that the gunman wasn't properly backgrounded prior to his naturalization.
