The merger between New Jersey City University and Kean University has been approved by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, one of the largest mergers of two public colleges in the state's history. The merger will see the campus absorbed into Kean and renamed Kean Jersey City on July 1, according to the plan. The Middle States updated records to note that Kean will be responsible for submitting all required reports and information on behalf of the integrated institution. The U.S. Department of Education is expected to approve the merger. The move is designed to help New Jersey city University stay open amid financial issues. It is unclear how many people may lose their jobs due to the merger, with some suggesting at least 151 employees, including 33 faculty members, were expected to lose their positions.
