Parents of out-of-state college students and snowbirds in Michigan are being hit with unexpected car insurance rules in relation to cars driven out of state for a significant portion of the year. Many parents with children attending college outside Michigan, along with snowbirds, are finding this issue costly. The Insurance Alliance of Michigan advises that if students are driving illegally for more than 30 days, they need to register and insure their vehicle in another state. Each insurance company may handle this differently, with a college student still legally domiciled at their parents' house to remain on their parents’ insurance. The state’s Department of Insurance and Financial Services also advises snowbirds to update their garaging address.
