The Trump administration's proposal to roll back fuel economy rules is projected to cost drivers more in fuel than they save on vehicle prices. This could result in U.S. automakers losing their competitive edge in the global electric vehicle market to foreign competitors like China. The proposal, named the “Freedom Means Affordable Cars” standards, promises to save consumers $150 billion from lower prices on new cars, SUVs and trucks but will cost drivers $185 billion to fuel within three years. The move could also put the American industry at risk by handing the global market for electric vehicles to China. Major U.K. automakers have since backpedaled on their electric vehicle plans, with Ford announcing a $19 billion write-down and General Motors announcing a second $7 billion investment.
