The US President has ordered the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) to provide political risk insurance and financial guarantees for tankers in the Gulf, possibly using the US Navy to escort them. However, concerns were raised that the administration had not considered this plan before attacking Iran. The insurance, which was provided during the 1987 Iran/Iraq war, is not adequate to adequately insure the hundreds of tankers moving through the Strait of Hormuz, many of which are not US-owned or flagged. The decision to provide such an insurance would likely be challenged in court as most everything is in the United States.
