APD arrests two suspects accused of stealing 750 lbs of copper

Two men have been arrested in east Austin for allegedly stealing 750 lbs of copper. The arrests were made after a 911 caller reported two individuals acting suspiciously while transferring items from a rental truck to a pickup truck. The pickup bed of the pickup truck was filled with cut, heavy-gauge copper wire and the rental truck had a switched license plate. The suspects, identified as 52-year-old John Waring and 48-year old Michael Fillenworth, were charged with Unauthorized Possession of Certain Copper/Brass Material and are also facing additional felony drug charges. This arrest comes as copper theft is on the rise in Austin, with police calling it a "significant issue".
