A multi-year KMBC 9 News investigation has uncovered patterns of misuse, abuse for restraint chair and full-body restraint devices, leading to numerous injuries and deaths. The Institute for the Prevention of In-Custody Deaths, a top law enforcement safety institute, is using these findings to train officers and deputies across the country and the world. The training uses portions of KMBC's Chronicle documentary, Restrained, to demonstrate how officers can prevent injuries or deaths when using restraint chairs or full-bodies. The institute has also debuted its new restraint chair training platform for law enforcement. Over 100 deaths or injuries were found linked to RESTRAINT CHAIRS or FULL BODY RESTRAINTS, and over $100 million in SETTLEMENTS were found to be caused by a lack of training.
