Jose E. Feliciano and his wife Kwanza Jones have purchased the San Diego Padres for $3.9 billion, breaking the MLB record purchase price for a franchise. The deal, which is 62% more than the New York Mets' $2.4 billion sale in 2020, is the sixth-largest in North American Sports. The sale has been described as 'insane' by some as a sign that baseball is not prospering and needs an overhaul in the next collective bargaining agreement. The Padres, who live in the 30th-largest market in the country, have set past past franchise attendance records and sold 3.4 million fans last year. Despite this, the team's success continues to grow, with a payroll exceeding $200 million since 2022.
