The Cullinan diamond, once the largest uncut gem-quality diamond ever discovered, was discovered in 1905 by a mine supervisor in South Africa. The diamond was transported to London in a plain box and to Amsterdam in the jeweler's own pocket. It was sold to the South African Transvaal Colony government for $203,000 in 1907, and King Edward VII was given it as a future royal heirloom. However, after it was presented to London, the diamond needed to be cut and polished properly, which required a journey to Amsterdam. Eventually, the stone was cut into pieces and transferred to M.J. Levy & Nephews in Amsterdam, where it was eventually cut into gems estimated to be worth several billion dollars collectively.
